Referral Tips

How do you get more referrals for services that offer referral programs? First off, forget about spamming (sending people you don't know emails they didn't ask for or posting messages in places that don't like ads.) Most companies will cancel your account without thinking twice for doing this. Not to mention that spam is one of the more annoying things on the internet. If that isn't enough incentive not to do it, don't forget that the response rate for bulk unsolicited email is somewhere in the vicinity of 1/100th of 1%.That said, see below for some tips on getting more referrals.

Referral Tips
(1) The first thing you should do is email everyone you know that won't get upset by the offer. Seems pretty straight forward but it's something a lot of people don't do. Also, don't limit yourself to email, there's always ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, etc... If you use any of these often you probably already know quite a few people that would be interested and you're inevitably going to meet more.
(2) The sooner you let people know, the better. There are 1000s of people a day signing up for these kinds of services. On the other hand, don't let that fact convince you that you won't find new people to refer. There are 1000's of people using the internet for the first time every day.
(3) Make a web page. It's amazingly easy and it's a good place to send people who want to sign up. If you don't already have web space, there are all kinds of free places to get your page hosted. Another option is to buy your own domain name. After that you'll find details about high quality, low cost hosting at our Webmaster Page. If you need help making your page, you can post web design questions at the Message Board.
(4) Promote your web page.
  • Submit your site to the major search engines, there are lots of free pages online that you can use to do this automatically. One good one is: SelfPromotion.
  • Put your url in your email signature.
  • Submit info about your site to online classifieds and to new website announcement pages.
  • Join a service like the ClickThru Network and possibly a link exchange service of some kind. There are reviews of ClickThru and a wide variety of other free traffic sites on our Webmaster Page. You'll also find a selection of site revenue programs for webmasters.
(5) If you can do it inexpensively, get the word out offline (fliers, classifieds, etc....) A lot of the people that don't know about these services yet are people who have computers but don't spend a lot of time surfing the internet. We have a feeling they would if they knew they were getting paid for it.
(6) If you're thinking of putting some money into this, some good ways to advertise include Pay Per Click (the most popular are Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing), opt-in mailing lists and paid email programs. There are, of course, many more ways to advertise.
(7) Don't take anything too seriously. We have done extensive studies which conclusively prove that taking things too seriously causes just about everything bad, including cancer, the common cold, the trots and global warming.
